I am a big girl, what kind of over the shoulder boulder holder is best underneath armour? I was thinking a simple sportsbra, but I wanted to know if that's ideal or not. Reason I am asking is that I have an armour fitting soon!

| Looking forward to Gulf Wars and pick ups |
[28 Feb 2010|08:23pm] |
I was reading through a few of the archives of "Fighterchicks" and discovered two years ago I posted looking to see who would be going to Gulf Wars and if anyone would be interested in pick ups.
At that time I was nervous about asking if anyone would be interested. Got to admit much less nervous ( amazing what two additional years of being in kit can bring you) BUT still looking forward to the fighting.
I will be very 'findable' this year if anyone is interested in pick up. Messages can be left for Dagmar at Ealdormere Royal cabin ( though I am going to try to find somewhere to pitch a tent).
Would love to cross swords, axes, ... polearms, great sword - though I am a sword and board girl.

Pre-preemptive apologies for advertising, but I realized that I hadn't let you folks know. ------------------------ Clan Yama Kaminari http://www.yamakaminari.com is delighted to announce that their co-prosperity sphere expedition has returned with treasures from the orient.
Amongst these is a donation of $600.00 in pearls for their Royal Majesties Royal Chivalric award in Sensei's Shieldless Tourney to be held at Mi no Hi Saturday February 28th North Park Lodge BMDL. http://www.yamakaminari.com/minohi/
The Royal Chivalric Award is to be bestowed on that combatant that in TRM eyes holds truest to the highest Chivalric ideals in Skill, Appearance, Comportment and Demeanor.
Noble Combatants come one come all to a contest of skill at arms and may the recipient of Royal Chivalric Award be humbled by the largess of TRM and their clan. Also, may their consort end up bedecked in pearls from the Orient.

| How Times Have Changed |
[13 Nov 2008|11:25am] |
I was poking around on the SCA.org website, looking for some specific information on fight practices, and this was in one of the search results that came up. It's from the 12 August 1975 meeting of the Board of Directors.
5.b. Request for further clarification on women fighting. It is requested that the Board further clarify the Society policy regarding women fighting in order that those organizing the Pensic War may know how to proceed. The Board is surprised that their statement last month was insufficient, but will try again. While it has been the general practice that women did not fight on the field, such has never been the policy of the Society for Creative Anachronism, Inc. Unfortunately the Marshal of the Society was misinformed on this point. The Board directs that a letter be drafted for their signature explaining this to those concerned. (The members of the Board are also sending a letter to those concerned concerning Lady Trude, who is the case in point.)

Hello, I figured that since I was on this list I should at least introduce myself
Im Lady Svanhildr Karlsdottir. I live in the East Kingdom. You can call me Svan. The other is just to big of a mouthful for the field. I started Heavy Weapons fighting in 1989 and went through till 1999. I had to stop fighting due to a shoulder, rib, back, neck, head injury. Most of that has healed now and I'm getting back into the suit. Its odd that it still fits me so well. I am acquiring new bits of gear so that will have a dramatic impact on my fighting. I have lived in 3 kingdoms (Aethelmearc, Atlantia, and East) and traveled to a few others. (mostly on business trips) I used to have a deep passion for this game.
Just as I was getting back into this the Duke I once called my Knight, boss, friend, etc... died suddenly. It rocked my world. Sympathy is not necessary, I'm simply sharing a step along my path. I did not loose my Knight, he just died.
My fighting quite frankly sucks right now. I am not putting myself down. I have many many layers of rust that are being removed. They are flaking off with every practice and event. I am keeping a Video Journal of sorts on YouTube if anyone is interested. Just search for Svanhildr and you should find me. the first video was the day after The Bosses funeral. I tried to keep my head where it belonged. The second video is a perfect example of how to do everything wrong. ;-)
I am currently in a closed face helm while I look around for someone to make me a new norse styled one. I also typically wear Black and red.
My current plans are to go a little light with fighting at events for the next little bit. I have a lot of head memory and some muscle memory but that is about it. I remember so much that I used to do and that I used to teach others. Now to just make it all come together. There is a lot to bring back online. I will be attending Gulf Wars this year (2009) and hopefully I will be fighting at least for a bit of that. (It would be a shame to travel all that way and not fight)
I put all this out here to keep me honest and for some of those tougher days... to keep me going. If I blather about my fighting then I have to be able to put my stick into the game to back it up.
I have no long term fighting goals other than to get back into the game and enjoy it. In the 10 years of my not being able to fight (I tried a few times in those years but it never worked out) I lost some of the fun I used to have with this organization. His Grace had wanted me to find the fun again. I was working on it and managed to find it from time to time. So, Thats what I'm doing now. Getting back into doing things I once enjoyed. Seeing if I still enjoy them and moving on from there. A person grows a lot in 10 years.

| Intro |
[06 Nov 2008|01:44am] |
Hi everybody!
The bio suggested making an intro post...so that's what I'm doing.
My SCA name is Lady Genevieve Grant Von Aue. People in the barony (Northkeep) and beyond call me GG. They also call me Jeni. And now sometimes Felix.
I am a rapier and cut & thrust fighter in the Barony of Northkeep in the Kingdom of Ansteorra. I'm always learning. I had to take a little over a year off fighting due to a medium-high risk pregnancy and health problems afterwards. Now I'm back and running whenever my work schedule allows it.
I'm also assistant instructor with Tulsa School of Defense that is a Midwestern Fighting Arts School. We teach rapier, sidesword and longsword of both German and Italian styles. We also teach grappling hand/hand, hand/dagger and dagger/dagger. I went to WMAW two years ago in Dallas/Ft Worth area and loved it!
My major project right now is an offshoot of TSD called 1588 Muster. It's a group of 6-10 people who make period camp and presentation as life would have been in 1588. We do pike drills and period fighting of that era. I portray a male flagman named Felix...mostly because I want to be active in our presentations as a fighter and pikeman, rather than a wet nurse or camp stewardess. Our first presentation officially as 1588 Muster will be at the Shawnee Renaissance Faire this coming weekend (Nov 8-9). I will post pictures!
I hope to find like-minded friends here and support on my SCA path of becoming a Cadet and any other topics that come to mind.

| Thank you, everyone! |
[07 Sep 2008|01:36pm] |
I would very much like to thank everyone who contributed to my flyer project. I got many more good pictures than I could use, but there were enough irresistibly good ones that I now have more featuring women than men! :) I only wish I had enough witty ideas to use all of them. I'll be putting all of them up on my Deviant Art account (with credits in the description of course) with the PDFs of them available through the download button on the left.
If you would like to use these in your area, they are easily modifiable if you have a slightly graphics savvy person around. PDFs are basically vector files (don't worry if you went cross eyed at that, your graphics person should know what that means). You can open them in Adobe Illustrator and modify them as if they were just a native Illustrator file. Of course, asking me nicely, sending me what ever information and devices you need changed, and being patient could also get it done. ;)
Again, thanks to everyone who helped out! I'll get those flyers up on DA soon! http://renessa47.deviantart.com

| Womens? |
[02 Sep 2008|12:03pm] |
Hello all!
At the moment, I'm working on making some recruiting posters targeting my demographic (18-25) to put up around campus and in various public places around town here (Lexington, KY, Midrealm). I've already made two from a picture I took (and one I didn't *shame*), but both are men, and both with a fighter kind of focus. I would like to do another pair but with women. However, I'm very squeamish about going out and browsing flickr accounts to hijack other people's pictures (and I imagine some might not be too happy about me doing that). And even the little browsing I've done, I can't find much that really suits my needs.
So, if you have any pictures that I could use, free and clear, of female fighters (especially waist-and-up shots of them in armor but without helms on, so they're easily identifiable as female) or lovely ladies in good looking garb, I would be very much indebted to you! If they're online, just link to them in a comment, or email me with a few (renessa47 AT gmail DOT com). The bigger the better! (GMail does have a 10 MB attachments limit though)
Also, attention-catching slogans about the SCA are welcome. ;P If anyone is interested, I'll also put up the flyers one they've all reached their final stage.
Thanks very much!

| Helm not reliant on chin strap? |
[26 Aug 2008|05:16pm] |
Baron Jurgen of Ponte Alto (and probably others if I were to ask around) has a helm with a chin strap that does not matter. His is a round helm and mine is a bassinet so what he does may not be possible for my helm. I'll talk to him about it (he was the guy who originally helped me to pad my helm and install the chin strap the way it is) but I thought I'd also consult the community here.
Is there a safe way not to have to rely on the chin strap to keep the helm in place? Can that be done with a bassinet since the bottom is more narrow than the top?
I like my bassinet: it has a huge face grill, very wide field of vision. However, I fight and it gets very obviously crooked. Then, if I get hit hard enough the chin strap itself breaks. Scary, yes, but it's happened twice and I wasn't hurt either time.

| Pics of some female fighters on Facebook. |
[24 Aug 2008|11:45am] |
I have pictures of female fighters from Pennsic 2008 on facebook. Hold on while I make this work...
Okay, LJ is not liking the link. 2008 Fighter Chicks is the name of the album. There's Lady Marie Therese (our "Queen" of Hearts), Lady Sophia, and at least 3 female knights and one possible female squire. I also put it up on SCA Heavy Combat. (Surprised Facebook lets you just do that without getting some kind of permission from the owner of the group...)
Did some random chick take a picture of you this Pennsic? It might have been me.
(If you know them, please tag them.)

You have to log on to Facebook for these. Hm. Anybody know of a better option?

Hiya, Hope its OK to join - I'm not SCA since theres none in my area (southwest england) but I am heavily into LARP, playing an elven ranger, and loving playing an action- character :D. I also do a lot of fantasy theatre in which I play a drow outlaw. I also have an interest in swordplay that both looks good and is effective, and in archery as well. I used to do Aikido but sadly University now clashes with the sessions. :(

| Weapon construction |
[02 Mar 2008|09:19am] |
Okay, it is early on a Sunday morning and I am rather certain none of my local sources of information are awake.
So bought new rattan and want to build either a great sword or bastard sword and I am looking for hints. ( Got my great sword authorization yesterday.)
I will take links or your favourite construction method, whatever you are offering.

Just checking in as to who might be coming since it was just determined today that a group of us from Ealdormere are making the 22 hour trip down to cross swords, axes or whatever else we can pack.
Hoping since it is the second year I'll be coming down I might actually get out there for a few more pick ups than last year when I was just a bit nervous.

I moved from the Barony of Ponte Alto, with dozens of fighters and five or more knights who regularly play to the Barony of Highland Foorde with, well, Sir Tascius Fabius. Ponte Alto has fighter practice twice a week, plus people drive an hour north for practice in Storvik. Highland Foorde HAD practice once a week until Tascius got some job related to the election.
I still make it to fighter practice in Ponte Alto and Storvik some of the time, not as much as I'd like.
I got a new helm at holiday faire that needs a...whatchacallit chainmail thing makes it look like one is tending bees? Aventaille? Camaille? Then at a 12th night gathering local armorer (Lady? Probably.) Adriana made a deal for me to "work" one event in exchange for the chainmail. Although getting these things together is a nuisance, having more than one layer of blue foam padding between my skull and my helm will certainly pay off...I hope. Unless I do something stupid and having the helm like that causes me to break my silly neck.
I built a pell! I SHOULD go out every day and give it 40 whacks before my breakfast tea. Instead I think, "Oh, it's dark out! I'm wearing office wench clothes! I wanna cuddle with my boyfriend!" Excuses excuses.
Tire left by the road = $0 Metal from a signpost (not taken by me, just left) = $0 Big old roll of carpet about as tall as a 6 year old, taken from a dumpster = $0 Boxcutter and blades to cut the carpet = $7 Concrete to fill up the tire with the metal signpost stuck in it = $14
Being able to wail on that 18-year-old baronial champion and maybe that cocky squire who shall remain nameless...and...oh, a lot of other people in helms. Priceless! (Or $23 plus the cost of my friggin' armor, so about $443 total if you want to be literal. That includes material for the gambeson I made. And I don't own my own legs, they're loaner gear.)
This is me in armor! If you see me at events, don't be a stranger!

| A New Head Case |
[26 Sep 2007|02:48am] |
Hello all, just decided to go and join some LJ communities tonight, and found this one. :) My name is Lantani of Trimaris and I've been fighting heavy weapons for close to a year now (yikes, that long?). I'd love to get to know some of the people of the community, but currently I have an issue that's been driving me crazy and I wondered if anyone can give me some insight.
I am a melee fighter. I love melees. Put me in a flanking unit and running with a bunch of spears and I'm a happy girl. I've faced the open field crunch at both Gulf Wars and Pennsic without blinking, the Ravine Battle, Castle Battle, Woods Battle, whatever. And I'm *hardly* a God(dess?) of War but I do what I'm told and I'm pretty good at doing it.
In other words, I take melees of ANY form seriously. WAY seriously.
Unfortunately, the same does not apply to tournaments. I understand, logically, why they're important. I mean, hell, the Crown is decided by a tournament. And I fight in EVERY single one, no matter how stupid. Because as conspicious as I am ON the field (there's not too many five-foot heavy weapons fighters of ANY gender), I'm a lot more conspicious when I'm NOT on the field. And I'll usually have four or five really decent fights, and the rest of the time I just suck. A lot.
I want to do well, I do, and I HATE performing poorly when I'm being watched, which I usually am, and its frustrating to show back up at camp and have to explain to one of the knights in my household why I got one-shoted by someone I should have eaten, but its a TOURNAMENT. And I just can't figure out how to click on the doom and gloom, fight till the last drop is spilled, determination I pull out in a blink of an eye anytime a melee is in sight.
